CryoPen for Skin Tags & Benign Skin Lesions

Skin tags and other benign skin lesions are extremely common. While many are harmless, they can become annoying if they catch on clothing, jewellery or during shaving.

CryoPen provides a precise form of cryotherapy that can be used for certain suitable skin lesions following assessment.

What Is CryoPen?

CryoPen is a handheld cryotherapy device. It delivers a focused application of extreme cold to the selected tissue while allowing the practitioner to work accurately around the treatment area.

What Can CryoPen Be Used For?

Following appropriate assessment, CryoPen may be used for selected concerns such as:

Do Skin Tags Need Removing?

A confirmed skin tag is usually harmless and does not have to be removed. Treatment is optional, for example if it catches or causes irritation. The NHS skin tag guidance recommends GP review when a tag grows, becomes painful or bleeds. Avoid cutting, tying off or freezing a growth yourself, because an incorrect diagnosis or injury can lead to harm.

If the concern is a wider area of uneven colour rather than an individual growth, see our hyperpigmentation and melasma advice. These concerns need a different assessment and are not interchangeable with skin tags or benign raised lesions.

What Happens During Treatment?

The lesion is assessed and the CryoPen is used to apply controlled cold directly to the treatment area. The treated tissue then goes through a healing process over the following days or weeks.

The exact response depends on the type, size and location of the lesion. You may feel a short sting or discomfort, and healing can take days to several weeks. Photographs show individual examples, not a promise of the same recovery or result.

Can Every Skin Tag or Lesion Be Frozen?

No. Correct identification of the lesion matters more than simply removing it.

A lesion that is new, changing, unusually pigmented, bleeding without explanation, irregular, ulcerated or otherwise concerning should be medically assessed rather than treated cosmetically. If the diagnosis is uncertain, see a GP or dermatologist before any freezing. Cosmetic CryoPen treatment should not be used to manage a suspected skin cancer.

Will One Session Be Enough?

Some small lesions may respond to one treatment, while others need repeat assessment or a different approach. Size, site and lesion type affect the response. Removal cannot be guaranteed, and a recurring or changing lesion should be reviewed rather than automatically frozen again.

Does CryoPen Leave a Mark?

Redness, swelling, tenderness, blistering or a scab can occur while the area heals. Lightening or darkening of the skin can sometimes persist or be permanent, particularly in skin prone to pigment change. Infection, scarring or recurrence are also possible. Discuss the likelihood of a visible mark for the exact site and your skin tone before deciding.

Aftercare and When to Ask for Help

Follow the clinic’s instructions for the treated site. Keep it clean, protect it from friction and do not pick the scab or open a blister without advice. Use the recommended skin protection as it heals. Seek advice if discomfort is increasing, redness spreads, pus develops or you feel unwell.

The British Association of Dermatologists’ cryotherapy guide describes possible healing reactions and complications. CryoPen uses its own device and protocol, so aftercare should be tailored to your treatment rather than copied from another person.

What to Discuss Before Booking

Ask who will assess the lesion, whether medical review is needed, what alternatives exist and what mark or recovery time is possible. Tell the practitioner about medicines, healing problems, circulation conditions, previous scarring and sensitivity to cold. The number of lesions and any further visits affect cost; check the proposed plan as well as the first session price.
