Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid, commonly abbreviated to PLLA. This biodegradable material stimulates your body’s own collagen production, helping to improve facial fullness and support over time.
Collagen contributes to the structure and firmness of the skin. As collagen levels decline with age, changes can include wrinkles, reduced firmness and a loss of facial volume.
Sculptra is intended to produce gradual changes, with the treatment plan tailored to your facial anatomy and individual response.

Sculptra is injected into carefully selected areas, where the PLLA particles stimulate a collagen response. The resulting improvements develop over the following weeks and months.
Any fullness immediately after treatment can partly reflect the injected fluid and temporary swelling. This initial effect settles and should not be taken as the final result.
Your practitioner will review your response before recommending further treatment.
Depending on your concerns and suitability, Sculptra may help with:
The extent of improvement varies between individuals. We will discuss realistic expectations and whether Sculptra is appropriate for the changes you would like to address.
Depending on your assessment, facial treatment may focus on areas such as the cheeks, temples and selected lower-face wrinkles or folds.
The injection sites and treatment approach depend on your facial anatomy, existing volume and previous treatments. Suitability for one area does not automatically mean that all areas of the face should be treated.
If you are exploring the different changes that occur with age, visit our ageing skin page.
We begin by discussing your concerns, medical history, medication, allergies and previous aesthetic treatments. We assess your facial structure and explain the expected benefits, limitations, possible side effects and alternatives.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions before deciding whether to proceed.
The skin is cleansed and the planned treatment areas are identified. Sculptra is then injected into the agreed areas. Your practitioner will discuss comfort measures, including the use of local anaesthetic where appropriate.
You will receive personalised aftercare instructions, including advice on massage, skincare and when to resume your usual activities. Follow the instructions given by your treating practitioner and contact the clinic if you have concerns during recovery.
Sculptra is usually planned as a course rather than a single appointment. The number of sessions, amount of product and time between appointments depend on your starting point, treatment areas and response.
We will explain your proposed course and its cost at consultation, then review your progress before deciding whether further treatment is appropriate.
Results develop gradually over weeks and months as your collagen response develops. The initial swelling or fullness after an appointment is temporary and does not represent the finished result.
Improvements can last up to around two years for some clients. Results and their duration vary, and maintenance should be discussed according to your individual response.
Temporary swelling, bruising, redness and tenderness can occur after treatment. Allow time for these to settle when planning around work, social occasions or important events.
Small bumps or larger lumps beneath the skin can also occur, sometimes with inflammation. These may require assessment and treatment. Your practitioner will explain the risks and how to seek advice before you proceed.
Sculptra is for adults and is not suitable for everyone. Treatment is avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding because safety has not been established. It should not be used if you are allergic to its ingredients or have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring.
Active infection or inflammation at the planned injection site must be assessed and treatment postponed until appropriate. Tell your practitioner about medical conditions, medication and previous procedures so they can assess your suitability.
The right treatment depends on the changes you would like to address. Sculptra focuses on gradual collagen stimulation and facial volume, while Profhilo is primarily used for hydration and skin quality.
Read our Sculptra vs Profhilo comparison for an explanation of their different purposes.
Profhilo Structura is another option that may be discussed for selected age-related facial changes. We can explain how the available approaches relate to your anatomy and goals.
Ageing can involve several changes at once, including dryness, pigmentation, fine lines and loss of facial volume. A treatment chosen for one concern may not address all the others.
