Fat-Dissolving Treatments: What Should You Know Before Booking?

Stubborn pockets of fat can sometimes remain even when somebody is generally happy with their weight and lifestyle. Areas such as beneath the chin, the abdomen or around the waist may simply respond differently to diet and exercise.

Some injectable fat-reduction procedures are used for small, localised areas of fat, but products marketed as fat dissolving differ in evidence, intended use and risks. The term alone does not establish that a product is appropriate for injection.

At Derma Aesthetics Clinic in Brentwood, Essex, our treatment information includes Aqualyx and Lemon Bottle. Before considering any procedure, the exact product, current intended route, evidence and suitability must be established.

Localised contouring is not weight-loss treatment or a substitute for liposuction. Suitability begins with identifying whether fat, loose skin or another aspect of anatomy is responsible for the concern.

This guide explains fat-dissolving treatment claims, product differences, evidence, recovery and the questions to ask before considering a procedure.

What Are Fat-Dissolving Injections?

The term usually refers to injection lipolysis: a procedure intended to disrupt fat cells in a selected area beneath the skin. Not every solution promoted for fat reduction has established clinical evidence or an intended injectable route.

Where an evidence-supported product is appropriately used, change is assessed over time rather than assumed from immediate swelling or before-and-after marketing.

Because the treatment is targeted, it is best suited to localised pockets of fat rather than somebody looking for significant overall weight reduction.

The purpose is therefore body contouring rather than weight loss.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Suitability depends on the amount and location of fat, the condition of the skin and the product being considered.

Common areas that may be assessed include:

Not every area of fullness is caused by excess fat. Loose skin, muscle, bloating and natural body structure can all affect the way an area looks, which is why assessment before treatment is important.

1. Aqualyx: Check the Exact Product and Instructions

Aqualyx has been described in older clinical literature for localised injection lipolysis. However, the current Marllor Aqualyx Cosmetic page specifies topical application. Older descriptions should not be treated as current instructions for every product bearing the name.

Ask the practitioner to identify the exact product, current instructions, intended route and evidence relevant to your proposed area before discussing treatment. A body-contouring marketing claim is not itself an authorisation for injection.

Areas People Commonly Ask About

A request to treat one of these areas does not establish suitability. The specific product, route and proposed area need to be considered together.

What Should You Ask About Aqualyx?

Ask which formulation is proposed, how it is intended to be used and which clinical evidence supports that use. The expected mechanism, recovery and risks must match the current product, not just a familiar brand name.

How Does Localised Contouring Differ from Weight Loss?

Localised fat reduction, where suitable, is a contouring procedure.

Someone with a relatively small pocket of fat beneath the chin, for example, may be much more appropriate for treatment than somebody hoping to substantially reduce their overall body weight.

A modest fat pocket around the abdomen or flanks still needs assessment against the exact product, intended route, evidence and your medical history before any procedure is considered. Larger areas may be better addressed through weight management or discussion with an appropriate surgical professional.

2. Lemon Bottle: Evidence and Intended Use Matter

Lemon Bottle is marketed for body contouring, but it should not be assumed to be equivalent to a medicine studied for injection lipolysis. Ingredient lists and claims such as natural do not establish injectable safety or effectiveness.

Swissmedic’s Lemon Bottle warning states that a medicinal effect has not been scientifically established and records a June 2024 distributor statement that the original ampoule solution was intended for external cosmetic use, not injection. It also reports concerns about samples whose contents did not match their declarations; the distributor could not verify those samples as original.

This is Swiss regulatory information, not a statement of UK legal status. It is a reason to ask for the exact current product instructions, authenticity and UK status rather than assuming that a marketed cosmetic solution is suitable for injection.

How Is Lemon Bottle Different From Aqualyx?

The names are often discussed together online, but formulation, intended use and evidence must be checked separately. Evidence for one product cannot be transferred to another.

They should not be viewed as simply two brand names for exactly the same injection.

During consultation, the discussion should focus on:

It is more useful to choose a treatment based on assessment than to arrive having already decided which product you need.

Aqualyx vs Lemon Bottle: Which Is Better?

Neither brand should be selected from popularity or a promise of faster results. Start by establishing the exact product, current instructions and evidence for the proposed route and area. Your medical history, anatomy and expectations then inform whether a procedure is appropriate at all.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Fat-Dissolving Treatment?

A typical suitable client is somebody who:

The quality of the skin over the treatment area is also relevant.

Reducing fat does not automatically tighten significantly loose skin. In some cases, removing volume from beneath loose skin could make laxity more noticeable, which is one reason the area needs to be examined rather than choosing treatment from photographs alone.

Who Might Not Be Suitable?

Fat-dissolving injections are not appropriate for everyone.

Treatment may need to be avoided or postponed depending on factors such as:

A full medical history should therefore form part of the consultation before a decision to treat is made.

What Happens During Treatment?

The first stage is assessment of the area and discussion of the result you are hoping to achieve.

If treatment is suitable, the area is mapped and prepared before a series of injections is placed into the targeted fatty tissue.

The number of injection points and amount of product required depend on the size and location of the treatment area.

The appointment itself is usually relatively straightforward, but this should not be confused with having no recovery response afterwards.

Does Fat-Dissolving Treatment Hurt?

Sensation varies from person to person and between treatment areas.

You may experience stinging or discomfort during the injections, followed by tenderness, warmth or sensitivity afterwards.

Some areas — particularly beneath the chin — can feel more noticeable because even relatively modest swelling is easier to see.

What Should You Expect Afterwards?

Swelling is a normal and expected response following injectable fat-dissolving treatment and can sometimes be quite noticeable.

Depending on the individual and area treated, you may experience:

For this reason, we prefer to describe these treatments as having limited rather than necessarily zero downtime.

You may be able to continue normal day-to-day activities, but that does not mean the treated area will look completely unchanged immediately afterwards.

How Long Does Swelling Last?

This varies considerably.

Some clients experience relatively mild swelling, while others develop much more visible inflammation for several days.

The treatment area matters too. Swelling beneath the chin, for example, may be much more noticeable socially than swelling hidden beneath clothing on the abdomen.

If you have an important event approaching, factor the possibility of visible swelling or bruising into your treatment timing.

When Will You See Results?

Fat-dissolving injections do not produce their final result immediately.

There will initially be inflammation within the treated tissue, and it takes time for the body to respond and for swelling to settle.

Any contour change should be reviewed after recovery over subsequent weeks; improvement is not guaranteed.

Photographs taken before treatment can be particularly useful because gradual changes are sometimes difficult to notice when you see yourself every day.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

Some people may achieve a satisfactory change with relatively few sessions, while others require a course of treatment.

The number depends on:

At Derma Aesthetics, treatment is planned according to the individual rather than assuming every client requires exactly the same number of sessions.

Are the Results Permanent?

Do not assume every marketed product has been shown to destroy fat cells or produce permanent reduction. Durability depends on the exact procedure, whether an effect is achieved and later changes in the body.

However, fat-dissolving treatment does not make somebody resistant to future weight gain.

Weight change, ageing and changes in skin elasticity can alter the treated area over time.

Maintaining a relatively stable weight therefore helps preserve the contour achieved following treatment.

Can Fat-Dissolving Injections Replace Diet & Exercise?

No.

Diet and physical activity influence overall body composition, health and weight, while fat-dissolving treatment is designed to target relatively small localised areas.

A good example is somebody who is otherwise happy with their body shape but has a small pocket beneath the chin that remains despite maintaining a stable weight.

That is very different from using injections as a method of losing a significant amount of weight.

What About Loose Skin After Fat Reduction?

Fat and skin laxity are different concerns.

If an area has good skin elasticity, reducing a modest amount of underlying fat may improve its contour.

If the skin is already significantly loose, however, fat reduction alone may not produce the result somebody expects.

This is why we assess both the amount of fatty tissue and the quality of the skin before recommending treatment.

3. Adding Venus Freeze for Skin Firmness

Where appropriate, Venus Freeze can also be considered alongside a body-contouring programme.

Venus Freeze is a non-invasive treatment using multipolar radiofrequency and magnetic pulse technology to heat the tissue in a controlled way and support collagen and elastin activity.

The treatments perform different jobs:

For that reason, Venus Freeze may complement fat-dissolving treatment in selected clients rather than simply replacing it.

Can Fat-Dissolving Injections Treat a Double Chin?

The area beneath the chin is one of the most frequently requested areas for injectable fat reduction.

However, not every apparent “double chin” is predominantly caused by fat.

Its appearance can also be influenced by:

If fat is the main contributing factor, injectable treatment may be appropriate. If loose skin or facial structure is the greater issue, simply dissolving fat may not provide the desired result.

Can Fat-Dissolving Treatment Be Used on the Stomach?

Selected localised abdominal fat can be treated, but the amount of tissue needs to be realistic for an injectable procedure.

Fat-dissolving injections are better suited to a stubborn pocket or contour irregularity than to very large-volume abdominal fat reduction.

For larger areas, consultation allows us to explain what is realistically achievable and whether another approach would be more appropriate.

Important Questions to Ask Before Booking

Before proceeding with any injectable body treatment, you should understand:

A responsible consultation should give you the opportunity to ask these questions rather than feeling under pressure to have treatment immediately.

Check Product Evidence Before Proceeding

Ask whether studies assess the same formulation, route and body area being proposed. Product authenticity, current instructions and local authorisation are separate questions; a foreign approval or a manufacturer’s marketing statement does not answer all of them. Do not buy products online to inject yourself.

The US FDA’s fat-dissolving injection warning describes serious reported harms and explains that its approval of a particular deoxycholic-acid medicine is specific to under-chin fat in adults. That US approval does not establish the UK status or effectiveness of other products.

If neck texture or loose skin is the main concern, read our crepey neck skin guide and ageing skin advice. Fat reduction and skin-firming treatments have different aims and neither can promise a surgical lifting result.

What Are the Risks?

Although fat-dissolving injections are non-surgical, they are still injectable procedures and should not be considered risk-free.

Expected short-term effects can include swelling, bruising, redness, discomfort and temporary changes in how the tissue feels.

Potential serious complications include infection, persistent painful nodules, damage to skin or surrounding structures, scarring and contour irregularities. Risk depends on the exact product, treatment area and technique. Appropriate product selection, hygiene, assessment and aftercare are essential.

You should contact your practitioner promptly if you experience symptoms that are severe, unexpected or worsening after treatment.

Symptoms such as severe increasing pain, significant changes in skin colour, rapidly spreading redness, fever or feeling systemically unwell require prompt assessment rather than simply assuming they are normal post-treatment swelling.

Fat-Dissolving Injections vs Liposuction

The two should not be regarded as equivalent treatments.

Fat-dissolving injections are non-surgical and generally better suited to relatively small, localised pockets of fat. Change occurs gradually and several appointments may be required.

Liposuction is a surgical procedure capable of removing substantially larger quantities of fat and requires assessment by an appropriately qualified surgical professional.

Someone wanting a substantial transformation may therefore not be an appropriate candidate for an injectable treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do fat-dissolving injections help you lose weight?

No. They are designed for localised body contouring rather than significant weight loss. They will not produce the same effect as reducing overall body weight.

Which is better, Aqualyx or Lemon Bottle?

Their evidence and current intended use should be checked separately. Aqualyx Cosmetic’s manufacturer currently specifies topical use, and Swissmedic records concerns and an external-use statement for Lemon Bottle. Verify the exact product and proposed route rather than choosing from a brand comparison.

How quickly do fat-dissolving injections work?

Results are gradual. Initially there may be swelling and inflammation, and visible contour changes develop as the area settles over subsequent weeks.

Do fat-dissolving injections hurt?

Some discomfort, stinging or tenderness can occur. Sensitivity varies between people and between treatment areas.

How much downtime should I expect?

Many people continue with normal activities, but swelling and bruising can be visible. We therefore would not assume that everybody will have completely invisible “zero downtime”.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the product, treatment area, amount of fat and response to treatment. Some clients require a course rather than a single appointment.

Can the fat come back?

Treatment does not protect against future weight gain. Maintaining a relatively stable weight is important for maintaining your overall body contour.

Can fat-dissolving injections tighten loose skin?

They primarily target fatty tissue rather than significant skin laxity. Where reduced firmness is also present, an additional treatment such as Venus Freeze may be discussed if appropriate.

Can I have fat-dissolving injections before a holiday or event?

Allow sufficient time for swelling, bruising and tenderness to settle. It is sensible not to schedule your first treatment immediately before an important event because individual responses vary.

Is Fat-Dissolving Treatment Right for You?

The first question should not simply be “Which injection should I have?”

A better starting point is what is actually creating the contour you want to change?

If a localised pocket of subcutaneous fat is the main issue, discuss whether an evidence-supported procedure is suitable and verify the exact product and intended route. If loose skin, overall weight or underlying body structure is primarily responsible, another approach may be more appropriate.

At Derma Aesthetics Clinic we will assess the treatment area, discuss your expectations and explain the available options before deciding whether fat-dissolving treatment is suitable.
